Joaquim

Since losing both parents to AIDS in 2001,16-year-old Joaquim and his 20-year-old older sister, Albertina, have lived on their own; they are very close. Joaquim and Albertina survive through the support of Reencontro, who help them with food and school fees. Joaquim also credits Reecontro with getting him back into school and out of trouble. He is now committed to staying in school in order to better himself and his community. As money is Joaquim's biggest worry, he attends night school in order to look for work during the day.

Joaquim is a passionate artist who dreams of becoming a math professor. About The House Is Small he says, "I love studying photography and the project. It has opened my eyes to new ways of seeing life. One day, I hope to fly overseas and see the world. (In the meantime) I want the world to see my photos and to come and see me, to see that I am a good friend and have a warm heart."

I want my kids to have warm shelter, bright future and good education. My family to accept me. I want to own a house, to be independent, have a good job so I can raise my children -- to educate them.
