Jeremias

Jeremias is a 12-year-old who dreams of being a pilot so that he can fly to Portugal and the United States. Through the support of Reencontro, Jeremias is able to go to school, where he particularly enjoys studying science. Jeremias lost both of his parents to AIDS. His mother is buried in the province of Gaza, while his fatherís grave is in Maputo. Jeremias lives in the outskirts of Maputo with a woman whom he calls "grandmother" and four younger children. His "grandfather" provided bus fare for Jeremias to visit his father's grave each week. Since his grandfather died this spring, he has been unable to visit the grave until August, when he went to visit the grave with other youth involved in The House Is Small. Jeremias was one of the projectís most avid photographers. He says that photography and participating in The House Is Small helped him to feel more at peace with his parents' death. His photos beautifully illustrate his own life, as well as those of his neighbors and friends.

comments from website visitors:

These pictures are wonderful, Jeremias. You give people in difficult circumstances so much dignity. And you framed the pictures so well - the woman against the decorated wall, and the man seeming to meet a painted figure on his walk.

Jeremias: What incredible photos you've taken! I wish I could be there to meet everyone, but you've brought me closer to your world today through this work! /ejs
