in focus: Maputo Day 1

Monday, August 6, 2007 - On Day 1 of the Mozambique project, participants met as one large group at the Maputo Holiday Inn, located along the western shores of the city. The hotel served as accommodation for the photographers and filmmakers from the United States. The kids from Reencontro arrived riding in the back of a blue pickup truck. The UNICEF group arrived in a van. The kids from Reencontro sang a song as a way to kick off the project.

Assembled in the hotel's grassy lounge area overlooking the ocean, the photography mentors from Venice Arts split the kids into several smaller groups to teach camera use. Building on the most basic principles of how to handle, operate, and care for the camera, mentors covered fundamental techniques such as framing, focus, composition, and capturing the moment.

Then the kids got digital cameras, Canon Digital Rebels SLRs, and practiced shooting pictures of each other. For most it was the first time they ever took a picture.

The group then broke for lunch. The kids were treated to a visit to the seafood restaurant down the street. While they were eating, the technical team downloaded photographs from the cameras onto a laptop computer.

After lunch, the kids reconvened in one of the hotel's conference rooms for a photo critique. Portrait photographer Russell Baer led the critique.
